Tickets & Fares
To travel on our trains, you will, of course, need a valid ticket.
You can either choose it on our homepage using the journey planner and purchase it at bahn.de or visit one of our Point of Sale.
Of course, you can also purchase your ticket from the ticket machines located on the railway platforms.
You can travel with us using the following fares:
- Deutschlandticket
- Niedersachsentarif (i. e. Lower Saxony fare) for the entire route from Hamburg main station (Hbf) to Cuxhaven
- Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) (Hamburg Public Transport Association)
- Deutsche Bahn, including all offers (such as the Bundeswehr-Ticket)
- Semester tickets of participating universities
- Holiday pass for pupils (Schülerferienticket) within the scope of validity
Provisions of the respective transport associations or tariff community apply.
We do not accept the following tickets:

HVV season tickets are valid across the entire RE 5 line. With HVV season tickets (weekly, monthly, subscription tickets and Profi-Tickets), you can travel from Cuxhaven via Stade and Buxtehude to Hamburg and back.
The HVV tariff for single, day and group tickets also applies between Hemmoor and Hamburg. The previous transitional fares to the HVV and the bus/rail tickets along the railway line are no longer valid. These have been replaced by the HVV tariff for season tickets.

The Lower Saxony tariff applies outside of the associations. For single and return tickets of the Lower Saxony tariff, the use of buses and trams for a journey to the start and destination is automatically included at no extra charge. This extended use applies in almost all of Lower Saxony as well as in Bremen and Hamburg.
The imprint “und örtl. Nahverkehr” (or similar) on the tickets indicates whether your train ticket also covers buses and light rail services at your departure and/or destination points.

This ticket is a universal day ticket for all local trains and public transport (buses, trams, and subways) throughout Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg.
Travel easily and affordably as a group through three federal states:
As a ticket holder, the Lower Saxony ticket costs just 27 EUR. The first additional passenger pays only 7 EUR and each additional passenger pays 6 EUR. You can travel together with up to five people.

Just use the train for short distances and do something good for the environment. From now on, you can reach destinations up to 50 km away for just 6 EUR: With the savings ticket, you can travel affordably from Otterndorf to Stade or from Cuxhaven to Wingst, for example.
At www.niedersachsentarif.de you will find an interactive map with which you can display destinations for each station that you can reach with the savings ticket.
The savings ticket is valid from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. the following day and from 0 a.m. on weekends, on public holidays and during the summer holidays in Lower Saxony. Free travel on site by bus, trams and subways at the start and destination are included in the ticket. Children under 6 years and up to three children up to 14 years are also free of charge. Cancellation and rebooking of savings tickets are excluded.

Travel on local trains in Lower Saxony, Bremen, and Hamburg for 29 EUR per month or just 25 EUR with an annual subscription.
The monthly ticket is valid:
- for students, trainees, BufDis (Federal Voluntary Service participants) and anyone under 21 years old.
- for journeys on all local trains in Lower Saxony, Bremen, and Hamburg.
- in 2nd carriage class
- within the specified area of validity
- from 2 p.m. on weekdays (Monday to Friday)
- from midnight on Saturdays and Sundays
- from midnight on all public holidays and during school holidays in Lower Saxony
- not valid on buses, trams and subways

Children and families
In many cases, accompanied children travel free of charge. This is what makes us so appealing when it comes to travelling with children. Taking along children free of charge may change according to the tariff and offer used. You can find details directly under the following links:

Severely disabled passengers
Holder of a disabled person’s pass who have purchased a valid stamp at the social welfare office, can travel for free on the entire Start route network. Please refer to our Conditions of Carriage.
Students
We accept the nationwide semester ticket of Lower Saxony. Semester tickets are tied to the holder and cannot be transferred. Any amendments to the semester tickets will leave the ticket invalid. Please also refer to our Conditions of Carriage.
