Some questions come up repeatedly. That’s why we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions and answered them all here for you.

Can I use the Niedersachsen-Ticket on your trains?

Yes, the Lower Saxony ticket is valid on our trains from midnight until 3 a.m. the following day.

Can I use HVV tickets on your trains?

Yes, HVV tickets are valid on our trains but only on the route between Hamburg Main Station (Hbf) and Himmelpforten.

Can I travel for free as a person with a severe disability?

Yes, if you have a valid disability ID card along with a valid stamp from the social welfare office.

I’m a student. Can I use my semester ticket on your trains?

Yes, the statewide Lower Saxony semester ticket is accepted on our trains. However, please note that the semester ticket is personal and non-transferable. Any alteration to the ticket will render it invalid as a travel document.

Can children travel for free?

This varies depending on the type of ticket. For detailed information, please visit the respective websites of the Lower Saxony ticket, HVV, and Deutsche Bahn.

Are travel concessions for DB employees accepted on your trains?

The following tickets are not accepted on our trains:

  • NE-Zusatzfahrkarte zur Persönlichen NetzCard M

Can I purchase tickets on the train?

No, unfortunately not. Please make sure to buy a valid ticket before starting your journey. At the stations, you will find ticket machines and, in some cases, staffed sales points (travel centres) where you can purchase tickets. Alternatively, you can buy tickets online at www.bahn.de or via the “DB Navigator” app.

The ticket machine is out of order and I can’t buy a ticket. What should I do?

In such cases, please contact one of our staff members directly. We will be happy to assist you.

I would like to reserve a seat. How does it work?

Can I take my bike with me free of charge?

My train was delayed or cancelled. Where can I apply for refunds or compensation?

Please contact us via our contact form, by email at kundenservice@start-unterelbe.de or by phone at 04721 2 04 97 24. We will be happy to assist you.

I left or lost something on the train. Where can I retrieve it?

All lost property is handed over to the Cuxhaven Town Hall. You can find opening hours and contact information on the Cuxhaven Town Hall website.

Where can I find information about cancellations and delays?

In our live timetable, you can directly check whether your RE 5 is on time or if there have been any changes.

Ich möchte im Anschluss mit der RB 33 nach Bremervörde reisen. Wo kann ich umsteigen?

Um in Richtung Bremervörde zu fahren, solltest du in Buxtehude umsteigen.

Weitere Informationen dazu sind auch unter bahn.de oder in der App „DB Navigator“ zu finden. Gib dort einfach deinen Start- und Zielbahnhof ein und schon bekommst du die komplette Verbindung inklusive Umstiegsort und -zeit angezeigt.

I would like to continue my journey on the RE 3 or RB 31 towards Uelzen. Where should I change trains?

To travel towards Uelzen, you should change trains at Hamburg-Harburg.

You can find more information at bahn.de or in the DB Navigator app. Simply enter your departure and destination stations and you’ll get the complete connection including transfer location and time.

I am a police officer. Can I travel for free?

Police officers in uniform are allowed to travel free of charge in second class without a travel document.

What do I need to consider when bringing luggage?

Portable hand luggage and carry-on items may be brought onto our trains as long as they do not compromise the safety or order of operations and do not obstruct, endanger or inconvenience other passengers.

All luggage must be stored in the designated luggage racks.

Can I bring my pet with me?

Small pets up to the size of a domestic cat, which are harmless and transported in a closed container (e.g. a pet carrier), may be taken free of charge. It is important that the transport containers are stored like luggage and do not inconvenience other passengers.

Dogs larger than a domestic cat may only be transported if they are leashed and wear a muzzle. For dogs of this size, half the regular or discounted fare must be paid. Please also check the respective fare regulations depending on your ticket (e.g. Lower Saxony ticket or HVV tickets).

Are there special regulations for guide dogs?

Yes, guide dogs are allowed to travel without a muzzle and free of charge, provided the traveller’s disability ID card includes the designation “B” or “BI”.

Can I bring my e-scooter with me?

Oversized outdoor (all-terrain) leisure wheelchairs, potentially with road approval, as well as e-scooters that do not comply with Regulation (EU) No. 1300/2014, No. 1300/2014ISO standard (TSI PRM) or the applicable weight limits (including user max. 350 kg) and are not used by mobility-impaired individuals are excluded from transport.

Can I buy drinks and snacks on the train?

No, drinks and snacks cannot be purchased on board our trains. The remaining snack vending machines are out of service.
